Roethke's Poetry Exercise

There once was a dog that was blue

With soft ears biting a piece of wood

In its mouth. It looked up at the moon

After rolling in some red mud.

The next day it met a frog who swung in

To a cool pond without making a sound.

 This surprised the dog and she began

to run and cut her paw on a rock.

The frog came and apologized for frightening

The dog and kissed its paw to make it

Better. This was tough for the frog to do because

He was not kind and this burned him inside.

English 1102

English 1102 was a very hard college class I think. I am still in high school and part of joint enrollment, so I have only taken four college classes so far. The other three were easier and did not have a lot of homework like this class did. There has been so much work we have had to do in this class and I feel like there is the most towards the end when everyone is ready to be done for the summer. I personally think it would help to move a majority of the work that is at the end, like the poetry project and the essays, more towards the start of classes simply because that is when students are motivated the most. The research paper process had its good moments and bad. The deadlines were a little close together, but at the same time helped with not procrastinating until the night before to write the actual paper. Some of the assignments in the process could not be required like the notes and quotes because it only benefitted us if we put a lot of thought into it and I did not understand the real point of it. These many assignments helped me to learn more in this class than a class where you do not put any work into it.

The Twilight Saga

Four books by Stephanie Meyer,

caused her fame to spread like wild fire.

Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn,

caused many teens to become drawn

into the world of vampires and wolves.

The first book of this series is Twilight,

which has a theme of love at first sight.

Bella and Edward’s lives are changed once they meet.

He takes her to play baseball and 3 vampires consider her a treat.

After almost dying, Bella and Edward are together forever.

In this series, New Moon is the second book.

Edward leaves Bella and with him, her heart he took.

She gets close to Jacob and does a cliff dive,

then has to go to Volterra to keep Edward alive.

When they return a compromise is made.

The next book, Eclipse, is about fire and ice,

Bella’s life is in danger, which causes enemies to act nice.

Bella visits Jacob, who forces on her a kiss,

and Edward proposes to Bella who will no longer be Ms.

She stays with Edward and breaks Jacob’s heart.

Breaking Dawn had a theme of love and eternal life,

love because Edward takes Bella as his wife.

Renesmee is born, which will cause a fight,

together to save her, vampires and werewolves unite,

to defeat the Volturi and have a happy life.

Hyprocrisy

As a high-school girl, I face situations every day in which people are extremely hypocritical. However, the majority of these high-school quarrels are trifling and not very notable. No, if I am going to spend my time recording one of these many situations its going to be a recording of something that irks me to the point of insanity. One such act of hypocrisy is demonstrated by none other than my own mother. Two years before I turned 16 I got behind the wheel of a car for the first time with my mother. Since that day I have heard a perpetual nagging in my ear every time I get in the drivers seat; "Betsy, you are going way too fast, SLOW DOWN!" It is not my mothers concern for my safety that bothers me though, its the fact that every single time I get in the car with her she speeds horribly. Sitting in the passenger seat of her vehicle on I-75 the other vehicles appear to be going at a chelonian pace and if I dare pipe up with "mom, you may want to slow down" it is received with "I have been driving for thirty years! I know how to drive!" It is completely ridiculous reasoning; "driving experience", as she calls it, does not give anyone the right to break the law, especially as severely as she does. This is only one of many hypocritical situations I have faced, but it is definitely the most blatantly annoying. 

Glee

Ryan Murphy's very popular show Glee is not only an extremely successful pop culture sensation but it is also a major benefit to society. Glee's central theme is acceptance of others regardless of their circumstances which is both consistent with American political culture and a reenforcement of the idea that every one is of equal moral worth (a notion expressed in the very first sentences of the U.S. constitution.) It is undeniable that raising a new generation anchored by this value is not only desirable but a necessity if the United States is to further progress as a nation.
The show is certainly controversial, which some critics may negatively point out, but the controversial issues discussed on the program forces its watchers to reflect and evaluate their own beliefs, a process that leads to political maturity according to the widely accepted structuring tendency of political socialization. Becoming politically mature is a crucial step in becoming a more well informed population, a better informed public will lead to a more advanced form of democracy in which American policy makers must acknowledge public opinion, and a democracy in which policy makers must acknowledge public opinion is what America has fervently striven for since it's origin.
Glee is a definite benefit to society. It not only reenforces U.S. political ideals but forces an advance in how democratic society operates by making its citizens evaluate their personal beliefs. By playing more shows of the same nature U.S. society can and will progress even further.

Racist or not?

Troy Maxson is racist. His political ideals are the misfortune that plagues this once great nation and they are the sole reason that he turned to the horror that is discrimination. His capitalistic/darwinistic attitude has existed in the hearts and minds of Americans since the 1930's and it was still prevalent in the 1980's when Fences was written. August Wilson noted the populous that believes in the republican idea of elitism by creating a character for his story named Troy Maxson. Maxson, who's very name parallels Marxism, believed in the supremacy of the white race. This supremacy thus made him feel under the white race since he was an African American. Maxson felt as if he did not have the same rights and authority, because the whites were superior. Therefore, Troy Maxson, in my opinion, is racist of the white people because of the how they treat him and their "superiority."

Worth

In The Death of A Salesman, Willy thinks he is one of the best salesmen there is. He talks to his boss about how he has brought so much money to the Company and how firing him would make the company worse because of all this money he brings in. In reality, Willy is a pretty poor salesman and does not sell many of the products therefore he does not make a lot of money for this company. His boss, Charley, tells Willy, "the only thing you got in this world is what you can sell." This statement could possibly mean many things, but I believe it means that you only live once and if you do not show the world who you are and the amazing talents you have, then no one will see you for who you are. This could relate to selling things by showing the client how amazing and useful the product is because with out this explanation they will never know the worth of it.
This can reflect America in both the 1940's and 2012. This relates to America in the 1940's because during this time America had a multitude of products and money since World War II was over. This statement shows that people would only purchase what a product if they thought it was amazing because it showed its worth to the customer. This statement also reflects America in 2012 because people buy things they are interested in and what looks good in advertisement. If a product is not well advertised then they do not want to spend their money on something that is not worth the price. Advertising something is the key to getting a customer to purchase they item you want to sell, but this will not happen if you do not show what it is worth.
